Ernest Trova (aka Ernest Tino Trova)
American, 1927–2009
Ernest Trova established himself as a sculptor with "The Falling Man," a series of figurative works. Additionally, he explored various ideas through painting and printmaking. While not a fan of abstraction, he looked to color, shape, and texture to express ideas often inspired by his love of the melodies and riffs of jazz music.
Never fully aligned with the Op Movement, Trova's works, such as Untitled, 1968, plays with our perceptions through the juxtaposition of simple shapes and blocks of color—like many Op works. For Trova, working in this manner was an exercise of the mind for both artist and viewer.
