Joanna Pettway
American, 1924–1993
Joanna Pettway was one of Alabama's quilting royal family—the Pettways of Gees Bend. Her mother Mary Jane, her sister Plummer T and Joanna were life-long quilting companions, and they made hudreds of quilts both individually and collectively.
"Stars and Bow Ties" combines two traditional quilting motifs in a typically ideosyncratic way. The designs are recognizable, but not symmetrical; the complementary color combinations define this unified and elegant composition.
