This design illustrates one of the many patterns featuring quail that were copied from Asian originals. The shape of the teabowl also derives from Chinese examples. It was only after German porcelain from Meissen began to exert an influence that handles on cups became popular. Although the fashion for drinking tea from bowls ended by about 1800, such shapes continued into the nineteenth century as part of more traditional Chinese pattern services.
