Canadian, born Armenia, 1908–2002
Ingrid Bergman (1915–1982) Bergman appeared in European and American films and received Academy Awards in 1944, 1956, and 1975 and Emmys in 1960 and 1982. At the time of this photograph, the private lives of movie stars were closely guarded in an attempt to promote the myth that stars’ personal lives were extensions of their screen personas. Bergman specialized in portrayals of strong, dignified, and sophisticated women, but was surrounded by controversy because her personal behavior was reportedly at odds with the standards suggested by her roles, such as Joan of Arc.
