Born in Selma, Alabama, Clark Walker's interest in art began in high school. While still a young man, he received early attention by winning an art contest sponsored by the Montgomery Art Guild. A new acquaintance, artist Charles Shannon, encouraged Walker's pursuit of art and suggested that he attend the prestigious Skowhegan School of Art program in Maine. While there, in 1962, Walker studied with Ben Shahn and Jack Levine.

Although the army drafted Walker in 1964, he continued to paint, creating a mural for the U.S. Army in Stuttgart, Germany. Upon returning home he completed his education and painted scenes such as Under the Umbrella, which illustrate individuals lost in thought.
