Faith Ringgold

This lithograph includes many of the same characters and landmarks that appear in Ringgold's "Coming to Jones Road" series, including Aunt Emmy, Baby Freedom, and the Palisades, a row of cliffs in Northeastern New Jersey. The subjects of "To Be or Not to Be Free" are on the same journey to freedom that Ringgold outlines in the "Coming to Jones Road" series, representing the ongoing struggle of oppressed peoples and their fight for freedom, in the United States and around the world. Through her art, Faith Ringgold is a prominent voice among African American artists and consistently strives to illuminate the experiences of Black Americans, both past and present.
