Jamey Grimes
American, born 1976
Jamey Grimes studied both art and biology, and his large-scale sculptural installations blend these two interests. Grimes melts, shapes, and transforms simple corrugated sign plastic to mimic the appearance of natural phenomena: the way light filters through the water, the patterns of coral reefs, or shapes outlined by canopies of tree branches. Playing with line and gesture, Grimes crafts organic, undulating forms of material and shadow that become what, as he explains, are “fragments of a conversation with nature. The dialogue can be hostile, soothing, or both. Storms, trees, and the sea personify heightened emotion, wisdom, and awareness.” With Roil, Grimes simultaneously evokes the swirling and roiling patterns of water flowing under bridges formed by the building's archways and cresting through a narrow path and also billowing cloud-like forms moving across the sky.
