Nora Ezell (aka Nora Lee McKeown Ezell)
American, 1919–2007
The MMFA’s "University of Alabama Quilt " (1984), was Ezell’s first attempt at creating a narrative quilt; it was an opportunity to tell the stories of the many people who had contributed to making the University what it had become.
Most of the symbols featured on the quilt refer specifically to Tuscaloosa’s University of Alabama and its history. She purposely quilted the “U. of A.” as an emblem on the top register of the quilt to indicate that the objects below were associated with the school. She also chose to use red and white as the primary color scheme because they are the University’s colors. She included campus icons, such as the Denny Chimes and the large red letter “A” with the University of Alabama’s elephant mascot. She was also inspired by football coaching legend Paul “Bear” Bryant, whose hound’s-tooth checked hat is featured in the corner along with two ribbons, one commemorating Bryant’s first Rose Bowl win in 1934 the other commemorating its 50th anniversary.
