Anne Goldthwaite (aka Anne Wilson Goldthwaite)
American, 1869–1944
Goldthwaite is best known for her paintngs and prints of Southern subjects. However she also experimented to a limited degree in other media, including sculpture. Apparently she did not create many of these figures, but the existance of seven was recorded in 1977.
This small (4 3/4 inches high) bust is made of clay, most likely from a local Montgomery-area pottery or brick kiln. It is finished with a slip that resembles a bronze patina. Although this portrait-head is not identified with a name, the features do resemble figures from several works already in the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts collection, most notably Goldthwaite’s "Portrait of Maria" (1976.150) from around 1926.
The provenance of this work is also of interest, as it was originally acquired from Goldthwaite by her friend and biographer, Adelyn D. Breeskin, a prominent curator and art historian.
