Kelly Fitzpatrick’s painting "Saturday Morning", a vignette of life at an Alabama country crossroads, is an excellent example of a Regionalist-inspired, Southern subject. The work gives the viewer a “snapshot” of the small towns that supported the agricultural way of life of rural residents, black and white. The buildings, mules and wagons, and people seem frozen in time, but the artist also included elements to suggest the slow invasion of twentieth-century technologies, such as the automobile and the smokestack. As always with Fitzpatrick, brilliant color distinguishes the work, the hot sun creating deep shadows that contrast with the radiance of high noon.
