"Genesis" is a bronze cast by Bedi-Rassy Foundry in New York of a marble sculpture Zorach initially carved about 1955. Like many of Zorach’s sculptures, "Genesis" features two figures (in this case a father and son) entwined in a compact composition. The softly rounded outlines of the sculpture retain some of the blockiness of the original stone that the artist carved. The textures, especially those of the base and the hair of the two figures, evidence the action of various chisels. The short, stout, simplified and stylized figural forms are characteristic of Zorach’s sculptures, which often exude a soft warmth despite their cold, hard material substance. In the hands of the master modernist sculptor, the direct carving tools shaped forms that speak of familial love and affection whether seen in the original marble or in a bronze cast made from the directly carved stone original.
