Albert Einstein (1879–1955) Einstein’s theories of relativity revolutionized modern scientific thought in the early twentieth century. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1921) and fled the Nazis in his native Germany, accepting an appointment to the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University (1933) for the rest of his life. Einstein’s name became equated with genius, but his long hair and German accent gave rise to popular notions of the nutty professor. Time called him “Person of the Century,” and Karsh thought he was “unfathomably profound.”
