Yvonne Wells is perhaps the most successful contemporary creater of illustrative, or story, quilts. A resident of Tuscaloosa, her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, and is included in many prestegious collections both public and private.

While some of her subjects are serious treatments of religious or historical subjcts, some are light-hearted and whimsical, expressing her love of children, and her creative use of materials. "Humpty Dumpty II" is an example of one such quilt, with it's brave presentation of Humpty Dumpty seated on a wall in the middle register, and the King's Men attempting his rescue in the bottom. The floral fabrics Wells has used are in color and pattern reminescent of old fashioned wall-paper or illustration, increasing the connection between this quilt and the children's story that is its source.
