The teapoy was a container for tea, a popular trade item for England and the Continent. This ovoid shape was popular until the late 1770s. The decoration on this teapoy suggests that it was a commemorative piece designed to celebrate Admiral Horatio Nelson, who defeated the Spanish and French fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The oak leaf borders and arms with rampant lion and sailor convey his status as an English naval hero.
