Chinese Export
Export ware for the American market was produced as early as the 1780s when the first clipper ships sailed from northeastern ports such as Boston, Salem, Philadelphia and New York. Much of the China trade porcelains for America were decorated with patriotic symbols such as flags, eagles, state seals and images of the American ships which carried the cargo. This saucer is decorated with partial arms of the state of New York. The two figures represent Liberty and Justice with an eagle centered between them. The border of dark blue enamel with gilt stars is a typical one in porcelains for the American market.
