Roppeita Kita (1874–1971) Japanese Noh plays declined in popularity after the Meiji restoration in 1868. However there was a subsequent revival of interest in the tradition due largely to Kita’s influence. Kita became the fourteenth head of the Kitaryu school of Noh actors and a member of the Art Academy of Japan. This photograph was taken when he was in his nineties. He is shown with his grandson on the stage of the Kita Noh Theater in Tokyo.
