Minnie Sue Coleman
American, 1926–2012
Minnie Sue Coleman was a prominent member of the quilt cooperative established by residents of the community in Gee's Bend, Alabama. She learned to quilt from her mother, Minder Coleman. Minder was one of Gee’s Bend’s leading citizens, having served as president of Gee’s Bend Farms, the agricultural cooperative established in the 1930s by the Farm Security Administration, which organized farming and weaving cooperatives during the Great Depression. As a gifted quiltmaker herself, Minder would later be involved with the Freedom Quilting Bee.
This quilt was one of a group of 10 works by quilters of Gee's Bend that were reprouced on a commemorative series of U.S Postage stamps in 2006.
