Debora Moore
American, born 1960
"Phalaenopsis—Gold/Ruby" is a massive but delicate glass evocation of an orchid plant. The viewer has to look twice to decide whether it is real or glass. Pink and yellow orchid blossoms are arrayed on a translucent rod extending from a green-leafed base that sits inside a simple dark pink bowl.
Moore created this work by blowing the individual elements and assembling them through a hot-work glass process. The artist says that she greatly enjoys combining old and new forms of glass blowing in each of her pieces. The work evokes the fragility of our planet, accomplishing Moore’s goal of calling attention to mankind’s dependence on and responsibility to nature.
