Al Souza
American, born 1944
Al Souza’s fascination with objects that contribute pieces to a whole, such as puzzles, provides the foundation for many of his cut paper works. For Orlando City Maps, Souza first obtained an atlas of the Orlando, Florida area, and selected several pages based on color and composition. He then hand-cut ovals into each of the selected sheets and turned them over to a computer technician, who scanned them. These scans were then transmitted to a laser, which used them as guides to cut precise holes into a variety of different maps. The laser-cut maps were then layered on top of each other and bound together. This action created an artificial and filigreed landscape with streets that will never lead to anywhere, rendering the maps useless outside of their decorative form. SM 5/1/09
