Worcester Porcelain Factory
English, born established 1751
Robert Hancock
English, (active about 1731–1817)
This pear-shaped mug is decorated with a black transfer print of Frederick, the King of Prussia, who was Britain's ally against the French and became a national hero in England. Frederick points to a trophy of arms with flags intended to commemorate battle honors. On the reverse is a winged figure of Fame, blowing her trumpet. The mug is signed "R.H. Worcester" with an anchor mark, a rebus for the name Holdship. The design is attributed to the engraver Robert Hancock, who probably copied a painting by history and portrait painter, Antoine Pesne. Hancock, arrived at the company in 1756, and was undoubtedly largely responsible for much of Worcester's transfer printing success. The print occurs on a wide range of shapes, including teawares, large jugs, and oval plaques.
