Currier was one of a group of American painters who studied at the Royal Academy in Munich in the late nineteenth century. His approach was based upon a love for the process of painting and the desire to maintain the fresh, spontaneous power of the artist's touch. To achieve this, he followed the practice of painting "alla prima", that is blending the colors through brushstrokes applied to the canvas while the paint surface was still wet. This gestural approach allowed the artist to model the larger forms, imparting a sense of unity to the compositions bands of earth, trees and sky.
