Robert Motherwell, one of the leading artists of Abstract Expressionism, was also one of the movement's youngest and most prolific proponents. Motherwell utilized energetic and dramatic brushstrokes in bold colors combined with black swaths of paint, feeling, as the other Abstract Expressionists did, that painting with dynamic gestures to create abstract forms was a way to access emotions.
In 1961, the artist began investigating the nature of printmaking and embraced it fully, working in the medium for over 30 years and producing over 200 different editions. He felt that he could easily translate his way of working into the print form, but he was the only Abstract Expressionist who utilized printmaking consistently.
