Yousuf Karsh
Canadian, born Armenia, 1908–2002
Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) At age 32, Finland awarded its native son composer a lifetime grant so that he could devote himself to creative work. His music is profoundly individual, nationalistic, and poetic in character, expressing his intense, mystical love of nature, and often conveying the brooding melancholy of Finland’s northern landscape. His works include seven symphonies, a violin concerto, orchestral suites, choral works, and over a hundred songs.
