Jacques Lipchitz (1891–1973) Lipchitz earned an international reputation for his modern sculpture. He first exhibited in 1912 in Paris. After German troops occupied Paris in 1940, he moved to the United States, where he had numerous exhibitions and public commissions. Karsh made this portrait of Lipchitz in his studio outside New York City. The sculptor later invited Karsh to a portrait sitting in his studio in Pietrasanta, Italy. Karsh readily accepted, posing for seven 90-minute sittings, then joining Lipchitz and local artisans for their regular lunch under a grape arbor. Karsh reveled in such interaction with artists.
