After beginning in the flour-milling industry, Rank entered the film world in the twenties with the intention of making movies with moral themes. He co-founded a studio and began to consolidate interests until the Rank Organisation [sic] dominated the postwar British film world. Rank’s popular films won many awards and bore the trademark of a man striking a gong at the beginning.
