Isaac Stern (1920–2001) This celebrated American violinist began piano lessons at the age of six and violin lessons at eight. He studied at the San Francisco Conservatory and made his debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra when he was sixteen years old. The prominent virtuoso helped save Carnegie Hall. He also served as a founding member of the National Endowment for the Arts, fostered the careers of many young musicians, founded the Jerusalem Music Center, and was lauded with awards and honors all over the world.
