James Merritt Ives (aka James M. Ives)
American, 1824–1895
Currier and Ives was the name of a printmaking firm that made and sold popular prints (primarily hand-colored lithographs) in New York City between 1857 and 1907. The principles in the firm were Nathaniel Currier and James Ives. Their business produced reproductions of artworks to be sold to the general public at modest prices. They were highly sucessful, producing nearly 7000 documented images recording a variety of subjects—topical events, pastimes, historical sites and many others. The firm acquired the images in many ways, including using staff artists, as well as reproducing the paintings of more famous artists of the nineteenth century. "Going to Pasture" is typical of the subjects depicted in these popular prints, designed to supply a pleasingly sentimental image of rural life to urban dwellers.
