Yousuf Karsh
Canadian, born Armenia, 1908–2002
H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. (1934–2012) Schwarzkopf graduated from West Point and served in Vietnam, where he was twice wounded and decorated with three Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars, and the Distinguished Service Medal. In 1991 he commanded the allied “Desert Storm” invasion of Iraq that brought the Persian Gulf ground war to a successful conclusion in four days. Karsh included two portraits of “Stormin’ Norman” in his American Legends book (1992). Both show “the Bear” with his hands clasped as in this photo, but none of those pictures show his Labrador retriever, who the dog-loving Karsh reported was by the general’s side throughout the sitting.
