Memorial plates were a trend of the last half of the nineteenth century, after the death of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. The Garfield Memorial Plate was created soon after the death of President Garfield in 1881. These plates were widely collected and displayed in the home; they were inexpensively made with a variety of designs, and thus available to the growing middle-class rather than just wealthy Americans. The plate design with ‘Memorial’ embossed on it was patented by James W. Campbell in December of 1881. This plate has ‘patent applied for’ etched on the back so it was likely produced before the winter of 1881. It was manufactured in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by Campbell, Jones and Company.
