Lee Krasner is best known as an Abstract Expressionist painter who was married to a fellow Abstract Expressionist, Jackson Pollock (American, 1912–1956). Krasner was primarily a painter rather than a print maker, but this screen print represents a style she was known for—one of gestural, organic shapes depicted in bright colors. Like many Abstract Expressionists, she was reluctant to assign meaning to her compositions, insisting that she arrived at them through personal introspection and an emotional reaction to events or places. Such works depend upon the reaction of the viewer to assign “meaning.”
