The painting in the MMFA collection was produced during the period when Beal was concentrating on the landscape around Noank, Connecticut. The subject, a sea or riverscape, is a characteristic one for Beal and the long, low horizon line in the painting is also common in his works from this period. The painting is an unusual mixture of sketchy, unblended impressionist brushwork in the landscape, and carefully blended, highly finished painting in the sky. The contrast makes the lower half of the painting seem unfinished and suggests a sketch rather than a finished painting.
