Sukuma-Temba Peoples
African
Although the Sukuma (people of the north) are one of the largest ethnic groups in Tanzania, very little is known about the sculpture of these Bantu-speaking agriculturalists and cattle herders who live on subsistence farms in western Tanzania, south of Lake Victoria. This finely crafted doll may have been a girl’s plaything, or it may have been used in dramatic song and dance competitions that involved two groups who vied for the attention and adulation of a Sukuma community.
