John Edward Heliker (aka John Heliker)
American, 1909–2000
In 1948, Heliker received a Prix de Rome, which enabled him to go to Italy, and in 1951, a Guggenheim Fellowship which allowed him to spend two additional summers there. His experience of Italy, its landscape and architecture, as well as the way in which those two elements combined in the hill towns of the north, had a great impact on his work, which evolved toward the abstraction seen in "Cliffs".
