Anne Goldthwaite (aka Anne Wilson Goldthwaite)
American, 1869–1944
One of the major cultural occupations of Paris in the early 20th century was the ballet, and particularly Sergei Diagalev’s Ballets Russes. This etching likely reproduces a scene from one of his major ballets produced in 1910 while Anne was still in Paris. Titled Carnaval, it was choreographed by Michel Fokine with costumes designed by Leon Bakst. While she might have seen the production in Paris, it’s more likely she might have seen Carnaval’s 1916 premiere in New York City.
