Chinese Export
Mythological scenes were popular as subjects for Chinese export porcelain design between about 1740 and 1760. Scenes such as this one were copied from European engravings. The Chinese artists had little understanding of the significance of what they were painting. Western features and anatomy were always a challenge to them. The central panels on this bowl depict the Judgment of Paris. The shepherd, Paris, offers the golden apple to the goddess of his choice, Aphrodite, who is about to accept it while her sisters, Hera and Athena, look on in disappointment. An iron-red spearhead border and medallion of flowers decorate the interior. The designs are painted in the famille verte palette.
