Part of a series called the Call of Couture, Williams explored how certain dog breeds are equated to high fashion accessories. Poodles are well-known for their elegantly coiffed hairstyles, making the perfect subject for this luxury artpiece. Fashioned from numerous black crayons and emblazoned with the gold Chanel logo, the artist presents a luxurious show dog.

Inspired by his love of the Fluxus movement, Williams rejected the use of traditional art media for objects used in everyday life. Williams wrote that he chose to use crayons for his works, because crayons evoked nostalgia for him. He adds, “The twist in the road to nostalgia is the creation of a new object, from a medium in which it was not intended.”

How does Williams’s use of crayons, everyday tools typically used by children, contrast with the image of a luxurious, branded dog?
