Working only with Black American subjects, the artist renders all her figures in a stylized realistic manner against a monochrome background. Their skin tones are depicted in grisaille and they wear bright clothing. Sherald’s work generates representations of Black Americans within the art historical canon while subverting the tradition of portraiture by depicting her subjects in such a way. By representing ordinary Black Americans without a political agenda, Sherald “challenges notions of the Black American experience as extraordinary or inherently traumatic.” Her portraits offer an extraordinary encounter with the lives and personalities of figures who are in other ways complete strangers.
