Jane Hammond
American, born 1950
In the early 2000s, Jane Hammond made a variety of works (paintings as well as prints) loosely associated with the concept of the map. The simplest function of a map is to act as a guide, and to establish the relationship of various physical “places” one to another. In an analogous way, the imagery that Hammond selected to create the “constellations” seen in "My Heavens!" is both signifier of an idea and its visual history. The artist assembled in these works “signpost” images that reflect upon the concept of man’s relationship with the earth, nature, and the universe over time, and with cultural history. Here the artist layers and leverages the digital technologies that increasingly characterize and enrich contemporary printmaking, using imagery that references themes of antiquity and the zodiac.
