Kuba Peoples
African
This container is delicately carved with incised relief designs that mimic textile patterns. As with their cloth designs, the Kuba avoid absolute symmetry in favor of unpredictable variations. The elaborate box is modeled after a special type of woven basket. Its base is a square that connects to a cylindrical body, and its lid repeats the square of the base. Both the handle and the knob for the lid incorporate human forms, a feature that is generally found on the more exclusive Kuba prestige objects.
