James Abbott McNeill Whistler
American, 1834–1903
This refined and delicate image by J. A. M. Whistler was commissioned by the French publisher Andre Marty for inclusion in an edition of his fine art print porfolio, "L'Estampe Originale." While many collections of its type were published at the end of the nineteenth century, "L'Estampe Originale" is undoubtedly the best known and most respected.
Whistler selected this composition to be printed by his London-based lithographic printer, Thomas Way, from a transfer drawing made in Paris. In the early 1890s Whistler was engaged in making drawings of young models posed in diaphanous drapery, some, like this one, were later transferred to lithographic stones for publication.
