Jim Dine
American, born 1935
Jim Dine has always been closely associated with the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, and although he is considered to be a pioneer of the movement, it is an uneasy affiliation for the artist. Dine has worked to distance himself from the avant-garde movement as well as to define his own artistic vision over the years. His work reaches beyond popular interests, and while his art features everyday objects, it is far more personal as those objects serve as metaphors for self-expression.
Piranesi's 24 Colored Marks again demonstrates Dine's metaphorical use of objects. The tools are autobiographical as Dine references his childhood (his father ran a hardware store) and his adulthood (working as an artist). The work further comments on the history of printmaking in the title, referencing the Italian printmaker, Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778).
