Frank Woodberry Applebee
American, 1902–1988
In the era before the washing machine, Monday was the day in which laundry was washed. In rural areas, for many years large iron washpots were filled with water and heated over an open fire, filled with clothing and stirred with large wooden paddles. The wash was then hung on lines to dry. In this composition, Applebee records a scene of washday in a yard, the washpot seen at the lower right and the lines of clothing on the left and in the background. At the doorway of a building in the distance, a woman is handwashing in a metal tub.
