Judith Jamison (born 1943) Jamison debuted with the American Ballet Theatre in 1964. In 1965 she joined Alvin Ailey’s American Dance Theater, a small company of black modern dancers. She was a principal dancer there for 15 years before leaving to perform on Broadway and to form her own dance troupe. She returned to the American Dance Theatre as artistic director upon the founder’s death in 1989 as his chosen successor, and retired in 2010. Karsh published two photos of Jamison in American Legends (1992)—this black-and-white picture and a bust-length color portrait of the dancer’s elegant hands framing her fine-featured face.
