Artist Pinky Bass lost her sister, Frances McCall, to cancer in the year 2000. After her death, Pinky felt uninspired to make photographs, but she decided to alter this portrait of Fran that she had made with the assistance of a friend, Carolyn DeMeritt, in 2000. At that time, Fran had been diagnosed with cancer which had metastasized to her brain; she moved from Pensacola back home with her parents in Fairhope and Pinky was then living in an apartment behind the family home.

Since Bass enjoyed needlework, knitting, and crochet, she began to embroider photos of Fran. This profile view was a favorite, partially because it was the cancer in her brain that finally killed her sister. Pinky made several different embroidered portraits, some with images of a crab, the astrological sign of Cancer, but she did not think those so successful. She was fearful of scorpions, and curious about what was happening within Fran’s body as the cancer and remission came and went. Bass has a strong sense of spirituality; she thought about the stars, fate, and our inability to control what happens to us.
