Will Henry Stevens
American, 1881–1949
Following the Great Depression artworks depicting regional subjects were encouraged, and Stevens obliged, portraying a variety of American landscapes. "Backyard Scene" presents what is best known as “mountain architecture.” The image depicts the back of farmhouse with outbuildings. Stevens would have been familiar with this scene from his time spent in the rural areas of the Appalachian Mountains, and it would have satisfied the desire for picturesque regional art at that time.
Importantly, Stevens worked in a style that is more stylistically advanced than traditional regionalists. He advanced his regional compositions with modern use of line, color, and form. The subject and style of "Backyard Scene" attest to Stevens’ modern regionalism.
