Beal was raised in Port Morris, New York, and became an avid yachtsman as well as a fine painter. He travelled exentively, and the seaports of the Atlantic, the Carribbean and Central America were primary subjects. Beal's style, an adaptation of Impressionist brushwork and color, was a happy complement to the scenes of water and sun that predominate in his work. This image boats at sail on a harbor was painted in Rockport, on the coast of Maine.
