This painting is the final one that John Moore made when he lived in Cleveland, Ohio, and immediately before he moved to New York City. The work was inspired by his observation of a dam in the center of a cemetary; he returned to his studio to create an image that recalled the forms of the scene, but was not a literal recreation. The vertical blue form on the right suggests water and the large black geometric shape on the left the dam itself. He categorized this painting as part of a series he calls "Obstacles" and he saw the composition as embodying a universal theme: the need to overcome various kinds of challenges that may arise in life.
