Inspired by poetry and spoken language, Lesley Dill creates sculpture, performance art, and works on paper that address humanity’s relationship to words and communication. Her imagery is almost always accompanied by text, and it frequently references the writings of the poet Emily Dickinson (American, 1830–1886). She uses the human form metaphorically or literally, such as the child’s dress in this print, to explore the connections between visual and literary expression. Dill was an English major who came to the visual arts later in life when her mother gave her a volume of Dickinson’s poetry for her 40th birthday. Dill writes, “Dickinson’s language releases something in my unconscious mind. My response is not tied to her content, but to my…experience of her words.”
