Mary Maxtion (aka Mary Pearl Maxtion)
American, 1924–2015
On initial viewing, this appears to be a precision-pieced block quilt. Closer inspection reveals just a few mistakes, or "somethin' of [the maker's] own," such as the strips along the bottom edge of the quilt that equalize the length of the vertical rows. Also, there are two odd blocks featuring a red star on a navy background ; their inclusion interrupts the symmetry of the diagonal rows of like-colored blocks. Such asymmetry is intentional; in departing from the traditional approach it expresses the quilter's individuality.
