Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958) After studying violin and piano as a child, Williams entered the Royal College of Music in London and Cambridge University; he later studied under Max Bruch in Berlin and Maurice Ravel in Paris. A collector of British folk songs, he incorporated their themes in many compositions, including his major work Pastoral Symphony, completed in 1921. He composed opera, ballet, symphonic, and choral pieces as well as chamber music and film scores. Williams was largely responsible for the development of public appreciation for indigenous British music.
